Insurance
Home and Contents
What’s the difference between buildings and contents insurance?
• Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home—walls, roof, floors, fixtures, and fittings. If there’s damage from fire, flood, subsidence, or storm damage, buildings insurance will cover the cost of repairs.
• Contents insurance covers everything inside your home—furniture, electronics, clothing, jewellery, and personal belongings. If your possessions are stolen, damaged, or destroyed, contents insurance will replace them.
Most people need both, and many providers offer combined policies for convenience and better value.
What does home and contents insurance typically cover?
• Fire, flood, and storm damage
• Theft and vandalism
• Accidental damage (depending on your policy)
• Burst pipes and water damage
• Subsidence
• Personal belongings (some policies cover items outside the home too)
Who needs home and contents insurance?
If you own your home, buildings insurance is usually a condition of your mortgage. Contents insurance is optional, but highly recommended—especially if you have valuable possessions or simply want the reassurance that you’re covered.
